Research opportunities for Medicine students

Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre

At the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre, we believe in nurturing the future of healthcare through hands-on research experiences.

We welcome undergraduate Medicine students to participate in a range of enriching opportunities to explore the field of palliative care, build essential skills, and contribute to groundbreaking research.

If you are interested in our opportunities to begin your journey in palliative care research, get in touch.

Scholarship and Special Interest Programmes (SSIP)

We offer a wide ranges of palliative care Scholarship and Special Interest Programmes.

For Phase I students, we offer modules which cover a diverse range of palliative care topics, including symptom management, decision-making, nutrition, exercise, implementation science, and global health. Our goal is to help you develop a deeper understanding of palliative care and the tools to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

Phase II Medicine students have the opportunity to delve deeper in research.

Previous students

We have welcomed a number of students, with examples of co-authorship in published research:

INSPIRE

Hull York Medical School is part of INSPIRE, a national programme coordinated by the Academy of Medical Sciences and funded by the Wellcome Trust to encourage medical students to get involved in research.

We welcome students to undertake INSPIRE research projects with us. Previous students have explored a wide range of topics, from nutrition and immune function among people with a cancer diagnosis to understanding the cost of providing informal care in the last year of life. These projects provide a valuable platform to contribute to cutting-edge research in palliative care, and we support students to co-author a publication.

Former students
  • Fatima Babar: Nutrition and immune function among people with a cancer diagnosis: A systematic review
  • Matilda Barnes-Harris has published a paper "Battery operated fan and chronic breathlessness: Does it help?" in BMJ Supportive Care.
  • Blessing Fabowale has published a paper Does the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) sufficiently prioritise enablement of access to therapeutic opioids?
  • Gamze Keser: The cost of providing informal care in the last year of life: a Health Survey for England study
  • Abid Khan
  • Fadel Lhaf: Attitudes, facilitators, and barriers to delivering nutrition and activity counselling/advice to patients with a cancer diagnosis.
  • Giovanna Licastro: Inter-rater reliability of the integrated palliative care outcome scale (IPOS) (April 2021 – Aug 2021)
  • Eduardo Muscogliati: Estimating worldwide needs for morphine for people who die from advanced cancer and proportions of need theoretically met by requirements over time (2008-2017)
  • Rodrigo Muscogliati: Estimating worldwide needs for morphine for people who die from advanced cancer and proportions of need theoretically met by requirements over time (2008-2017)
  • Lara Othman
  • Aliya Prihartadi: INSPIRE: Non-medical devices for chronic breathlessness: Use, barriers and facilitators for patients, carers and clinicians - a scoping review
  • Afreen Salim: Nutrition and immune function among people with a cancer diagnosis: A systematic review
  • Vaishnavi Sharma

Research mentorship

We welcome expressions of interest from undergraduate Medicine students who wish to gain research experience by working on existing projects within Wolfson.

Previous students
  • Christopher Braithwaite: Improving Appropriate Access and Availability of Opioids for Cancer-related Pain Control in India: bridging the gap between policy and practice
  • Joshua Brown: Fan Facial Airflow Recovery from Exercise Patient (FANFARE P) Trial
  • Gamze Keser: Carers HSE (Health and Social Care Services)
  • Joseph Mankel: Improving Appropriate Access and Availability of Opioids for Cancer-related Pain Control in India: bridging the gap between policy and practice
  • Isabel Miller: Fan Facial Airflow Recovery from Exercise Patient (FANFARE P) Trial

Elective opportunities

Medicine students carry out a six-week elective at the beginning of their final year, where they can choose to work in a specialist service or health related organisation. We welcome elective placements in Wolfson to help you expand your horizons in research and palliative care.

Past elective students
  • Natalie Barclay-Klingle: Natalie co-authored a paper in the European Respiratory Journalin her elective.
  • Sarah O’Beirne: Completion of the data collection for FANFARE H the healthy participant study
  • Andrew Brew: Completion of the data collection for FANFARE H the healthy participant study

Intercalated MSc

If you have a relevant research interest, we welcome opportunities to supervise your dissertation in an Intercalated MSc in Medical or Human Sciences (by thesis). Please note we do not have specific funding available, as this is usually sought on a case-by-case basis.
