Policy research is designed to directly inform government, other national organisations (such as the NHS), and regional organisations (such as Integrated Care Boards), who are making policy decisions about health and social care. It is intended to inform these decisions, help ensure they are based on best evidence, and build research to fill gaps in that evidence when needed.
Policy which is not informed by good quality evidence can lead to waste of resources, time, and effort. In contrast, policy which is underpinned by good evidence is much more likely to deliver optimal palliative and end of life care for those people and their families affected by advanced illness.
