Applying for a research degree

Find out how and when to apply to a research degree at Hull York Medical School (PhD, MD and MSc by thesis).

Identify a research area of interest

You might already have a specific supervisor or project in mind, or maybe you're thinking more about an area of study rather than a specific project. Whichever route you're considering, here are some starting points:

If not applying to an advertised position please ensure you have contacted a potential supervisor and discussed your project with them before applying. With their agreement please name them on your application so that it is clear these discussions have taken place.

Complete your application

We recommend all prospective students to visit the University of York website for full details of how to apply.

Applications are made on the University of York website:

We advise to apply at least 8 weeks before your intended start date (or earlier if you are an international student to allow for visa applications).

Apply for funding

UK Government loans: you may be entitled to a loan to help fund your research degree.
