Undergraduate Awards

Lucie Low

"I'm incredibly grateful to have been recognised for this award. It was the product of hard work, passion for the subject of medicine and the exceptional dedication of the lecturers and tutors, whose guidance has been invaluable. Thank you to all of the Gateway team; your knowledge, kindness and dedication to medicine is inspiring to us all. This year has not been without its challenges - academically and personally. However it is the challenges that allow us to grow into the doctors we hope to be. Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to my family, friends and flatmates. Their unwavering love, support and belief has made all of this possible."

"After a rollercoaster of a journey getting into Phase II, it's a lovely, reassuring feeling to have the hard work recognised. In the Medical School, I'm lucky to be constantly surrounded by talented and caring individuals that I can learn from. Even though I feel that I'm light years away from being like the people I admire, I'm thankful that I can even try. I truly owe everything to my family and friends, and I know I can keep going with them by my side."

Hull York Medical School

Awarded to the student with the best overall academic performance over the five years of the MB BS Programme. This is assessed as the student with the greatest number of excellent grades achieved in the duration of the course.

This award was established by our founding Dean, Professor Bill Gillespie, upon his retirement.

Ruby Cummings

"I am absolutely delighted to receive this award which I see as a reflection of all the hard work and effort that I have put into realising my dream. I have wanted to be a doctor since my early teens and Hull York Medical School has been instrumental in me achieving that. The course has been interesting, and challenging but overall enjoyable. The Hull York Medical School teaching has been excellent but, more importantly, my lecturers have been approachable, supportive and encouraging throughout - so a massive thank you to all of them - sharing their knowledge, experience and insight has helped me grow. A special mention to Mr Alexander for his support in what is a testing final year."

Shannon Fisher

"It is a pleasure to receive this award as recognition for all the hard work I have put into this degree. I would like to thank my family for all of their support throughout every step of this long, hard but rewarding journey. I will dedicate this award to all the people who told me I wouldn't be good enough and shouldn't pursue a career in medicine as proof for my fellow colleagues and students who have been told the same, that you can achieve whatever you put your mind to if you put the hard work in and enjoy the ups and downs that is the adventure of medicine."

Joseph Mankel

"I don't even know where to start with this. What a journey it has been! I came into med school with a 6-week-old baby and left with a 5-year-old and a second daughter, who made it just in time for finals results. So, to think I'd have managed it, alongside being recognised for this achievement is unbelievable. I couldn't have done any of it without my partner who supported me through all of the hard work! And a massive shout out to those who truly befriended "the one with a kid" that know exactly who they are."
