Role at Hull York Medical School

Amaya is a Lecturer in Medical Education in the Health Professions Education Unit (HPEU) and Programme Director for the Health Professions Education (HPE) PG Certificate and Diploma programmes. Her role includes leading and teaching on the HPE programme, while contributing to tutor training and research activities of the HPEU. She is also the school's staff EDI champion for race and ethnicity.

Biography

Amaya has over fourteen years of experience in undergraduate and postgraduate health professions education and educational research. She completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, where she then worked as a Lecturer in Medical Education before moving to the Leeds Institute of Medical Education, University of Leeds as a Visiting Research Fellow. Amaya joined HYMS in February 2022. She holds an MD in Medical Education from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Research

Amaya's MD research was on 'lapses of professionalism in Sri Lankan medical students and appropriate remedial measures'. Her current research largely focuses on applying a lens of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to different aspects of health professions education. Her research interests include EDI, professionalism and educational experience.

Teaching

Amaya is Programme Director, module lead, tutor and supervisor on the MSc, Diploma and Certificate in Health Professions Education programmes. She also contributes to teaching on the Medicine with a Gateway Year programme and other aspects of the MB BS programme.

Amaya welcomes enquiries from prospective students interested in undertaking a postgraduate research degree in areas such as EDI and professionalism.

Amaya is currently a co-supervisor for Hannah Wakefield (PhD) and Dr Dua'a Alzboon (PhD).
