Alex is a Trial Manager on the Yorkshire Cancer Research funded CANFit study; a study looking the effect of personalised, home-based exercise programmes on disease-free survival among early-stage high-risk recurring cancers in Yorkshire. Alex completed her PhD in 2022 in the detection and assessment of malnutrition, sarcopenia and cachexia in older adults with cancer as part of the Yorkshire Cancer Research funded TRANSFORM group - Transforming Cancer Outcomes in Yorkshire.

Biography

Alex is a Trial Manager for CANFit, a multi-component, personalised, home-based exercise study for patients with early-stage, high-risk cancers in Yorkshire, led by Dr Cindy Forbes.

Alex completed her PhD in 2022, which included a mixed-methods study investigating nutrition-related wasting disorders in older adults with cancer, as part of the Yorkshire Cancer Research funded Transform group. This study investigated patients’ views and experiences of these conditions, as well as their prevalence and overlap in older adults with cancer. Alex is also part of the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre at the University of Hull.

Alex studied Dietetics at Nottingham University, and graduated in 2014 with a Masters in Nutrition (Dietetics). Alex is a Registered Dietitian, specialising in medical and surgical oncology, and also a Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Hull

Research

As part of her PhD, Alex has recently completed a mixed-methods observational cohort study with older adults with cancer, investigating the prevalence, overlap, and predictors of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and cachexia in hospitalised patients.

Recent publications include a systematic review and meta-analysis of markers of malnutrition in older adults with cancer, and a mixed-methods systematic review investigating patients views and experiences of malnutrition screening.
