Paul Crampton is Director of the Health Professions Education Unit. He joined Hull York Medical School in February 2019 as Programme Director for the MSc, Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate in Health Professions Education, and is Senior Lecturer in Health Professions Education.
Paul has over fifteen years' experience in health professions education with a high-quality education and research profile indicated by publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and significant grant income.
Paul has extensive experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and more widely in health professions research including approaches to teaching and learning, professional development and curriculum development. Paul has expertise in subjects such as inter-professional learning, quality assurance, research cultures, priority setting, longitudinal community placements, workplace bullying, professionalism, fitness to practise and continuing professional development. He holds senior fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators.
Utilising a range of methodologies to investigate current trends in medical education Paul has secured funding from a wide range of commissioning bodies including the UK Department of Health, National Institute for Health Services Research, General Medical Council, General Dental Council, Health Education England, Health and Care Professions Council, Monash Education Academy, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University, NHS Employers, and Medical Schools Council.
Paul completed his PhD at Durham University in 2015, with a thesis entitled: Medical student learning during longitudinal clinical placements in under-served, deprived, community areas; a qualitative study. Paul has an educational background in Psychology with Sports Science and Occupational Psychology. He has previously worked as a postdoctoral research fellow/associate at University College London, Monash University and Newcastle University.
Paul's research seeks to enhance and invigorate the ways in which health professions education is conducted in the workplace, addressing key workforce, regulatory and health professional education issues. Collectively, his work facilitates in-depth understandings of professionalism, regulatory approaches, methodological designs and educational innovations that lead to a range of implications for individuals, teams and organisations. The core theme of his current research orientates around enhancing practice in the workplace be it undergraduate or postgraduate education, exploring a range of factors such as longitudinal placements, identity, inter-professional learning, empathy, wellbeing and fitness to practise.
Broadly speaking Paul's research interests are in: Workplace learning, longitudinal community placements, inter-professional learning, professionalism, workplace bullying and dignity, quality assurance, transitions, qualitative research, mixed-methods, systematic literature reviews, realist synthesis and evaluation.
Paul is the Programme Director, module lead and a course tutor for the MSc, Diploma and Certificate in Health Professions Education.
Paul is involved with teaching on various aspects of the MB BS programme and assessments.

Paul is currently a co-supervisor for Dr Kishan Rees (MD) and primary supervisor for Hannah Wakefield (PhD) and Dr Richard Bodington (MD) . He co-supervised Dr Usmaan Omer to timely completion of his PhD.
