Role at Hull York Medical School

Dr Su is a lecturer in pharmacology at the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) based at the University of Hull’s campus. Her role at HYMS is contributing towards teaching in a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, in particular the MSc Pharmacology and Drug Development programme.

She is also the Director and Admission Tutor for the MSc Pharmacology and Drug Development programme.

Biography

Dr Su is a passionate educator and a multidisciplinary researcher. She received her MSc in Medical Biotechnology by research (2007) from the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. She then later pursued a PhD in Pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University (Australia) (2019). Following her PhD, she worked as a research assistant/research support officer in Ventura’s Lab at Monash Institutes of Pharmaceutical Sciences, focusing on male contraceptive development.

Apart from laboratory research role, she was also a passionate and experienced teaching associate at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University (2015-2022) before joining Hull York Medical School in 2023.

Research

Dr Su’s main research interest is investigating ethnopharmacology for human diseases/disorders, in particular urogenital related. She is also interested in studying ethnobotany particularly medicinal plants in treating and managing noncommunicable diseases.

Her PhD research aimed to assess the effectiveness of plant extracts in treating urological disorders by investigating their effects on nerve-mediated contractility of isolated rat prostates. The research has provided substantial evidence to test the plant extract in clinical trials for the treatment of symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

She is also interested in human gene expression studies as well as anticancer and antimicrobial compound isolation from biological resources.
