Professor Dumbor Ngaage is a consultant and Cardiac surgery Clinical Lead at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He graduated from from the college of Medicine, University of Benin, Nigeria, and obtained postgraduate specialist degrees from Nigeria and the UK. He then completed a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, USA, and a Masters’ degree in Clinical Research from Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He is an accomplished clinical scientist with multiple NIHR research grants.
I am the chief investigator for an HTA-funded UK wide RCT called FARSTER-care. This research will redefine the recovery pathway following cardiac surgery. Current practice after cardiac surgery is for patients to undergo postoperative review at 6 weeks and start cardiac rehabilitation from 8 weeks after hospital discharge. This practice is not evidence-based and may prolong the recovery process with implications for patient fitness and health economics.
FARSTER-care will reduce the recovery pathway by almost half; with postoperative review at 3 weeks and cardiac rehabilitation starting at 4 weeks after hospital discharge. Physical fitness measures, patient reported outcomes and cost-effectiveness data will be compared between the two pathways.
