Professor Hepburn is a consultant in acute medicine, diabetes and endocrinology at Hull Royal Infirmary where he was appointed in 1995 following training in Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow. He graduated in 1984 from Dundee and has also gained an MD based on research into hypoglycaemia in people with type 1 diabetes, and more recently a masters degree in medical law and ethics from the University of Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has extensive experience in medical management, including a period of over seven years as the trust medical director at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He has held a number of roles in the Hull York Medical School over the last six years, including PBL tutor, Phase II tutor, academic lead for Phase II, academic lead for procedural skills and director of clinical studies. Currently, he is director of undergraduate medical education at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, academic lead for Phase III and joint lead for pharmacology, prescribing and therapeutics for Phases II and III. He is also involved nationally with the Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA) as a question writer and as a member of the standard setting group for the PSA. He is also a member of the standard setting group for the MSCAA national pilot and a question writer for the specialty certificate examination for acute medicine.
