Andrew undertakes research and teaching at the Hull York Medical School for half the week. He is based in York and works mainly within the Mental Health and Addictions Research Group and the Academy of Primary Care. He is also part of the Institute of Mental Health Research at York.
Andrew qualified in medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2012. He is a practising GP and spends half his week working clinically or in clinical leadership roles from his practice in York. He has a longstanding interest in primary care mental health research and medical education. He was awarded an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship, which commenced in January 2019 (DRF-2018-11-ST2-044). He was awarded his PhD in November 2023 (Thesis: "Predicting and preventing relapse of depression in primary care").
Andrew's research interests are wide-ranging; his current research is primarily focussed on improving care for people with common mental health problems in primary care. He is also interested in research in medical generalism, global and public health, medically unexplained symptoms, and endocrine disorders. He has experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
Andrew is involved in the regular clinical training of Hull York Medical School medical students, Foundation doctors and GP Registrars.
Andrew undertakes his current work in collaboration with colleagues at Keele University; University of Birmingham; University College London; University of Auckland, New Zealand; and Western University, Canada. He has also collaborated with colleagues from Umeå University, Sweden; University of Pretoria, South Africa; University of Manchester and other institutions, on previous projects. He is a member of the International TaskForce for RelApse prevention of depression and anxiety (ITFRA).
Andrew is happy to supervise any postgraduate students with research interests in primary care, mental health or public health.
