On Tuesday 23 April, the Hull York Medical School community came together on social media to celebrate the exceptional medical education and support provided to students on the undergraduate Medicine and MSc in Physician Associate Studies programmes.

The event saw 30 winners announced across seven categories, via the Hull York Medical School Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook pages, using the hashtag #HYMSawards.

The identities of more than 150 nominees had been revealed the previous week, on the Medical School website, and also on social media.

The student-led Teaching Excellence Awards provide an opportunity for students on the Medicine and Physician Associate Studies programmes to recognise those tutors and colleagues who have gone the extra mile to support them in their studies, on clinical placement or in PBL sessions, as well as in a pastoral or extra-curricular capacity.

Presenting duties were undertaken by a mixture of Medicine and Physician Associate students, who were given the opportunity to share some of the comments about winners, submitted as part of the nominations process.

Student Chair of the Hull York Medical School Student Staff Committee Niamh McBride welcomed guests on behalf of the student body. She said:

“Beyond the textbooks and lectures, it is the personal connection between teacher and student that truly shapes us as future clinicians. Our award recipients have not only excelled in delivering curriculum content but have also gone above and beyond to inspire, encourage and uplift their students… Behind every good doctor, there was first an excellent teacher.”

Welcoming guests to the event, Dean of Hull York Medical School Professor Matt Morgan said:

“Our tutors and support colleagues don’t just deliver medical education – they deliver exceptional medical education, providing learning experiences and opportunities that will stay with our students throughout their careers. By demonstrating our School’s values, they inspire our students to achieve great things as they prepare to enter the NHS workforce.”
