On Saturday 27 July 2024, final year students from Hull York Medical School came together with friends, family and staff to celebrate their graduation from the universities of Hull and York.

Over 220 graduates attended the ceremony hosted by the University of York. Reflecting on the day, Professor Matthew Morgan, Dean of the Medical School, said:

"It was an immense privilege to be part of the Graduation Ceremony and celebrate the achievements of the class of 2024. Graduation is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, and for our Medicine graduates, marks the day they officially become doctors. I am immensely proud of what they have achieved already and the difference I know they will make to their patients’ lives as they enter clinical practice and start the next stage of their careers."

MB BS Medicine graduate Dr Oyinda Adeniyi led the class of 2024 in reciting the 'Physician’s Pledge' - the World Medical Association’s Declaration of Geneva which asks physicians to pledge themselves to the highest standard of ethics and practice in the interests of their patients and the medical profession.

She also shared some of her own reflections and said:

"Growing up, my parents instilled in us the paramount importance of education. One lesson echoed persistently in our home was: "Focus on your education and forge your path—that is yours to keep." This advice underscored the value of intentionality and working hard in whatever we choose to do, this has been a key part of my story."

She also encouraged her fellow students not to let life fly by without considering the daily impact of decisions, and to live their lives with purpose and resilience. Her final message was, "Class of 2024, I believe that every single one of you is going to go out there and do great things."

Images from the ceremony were shared on social media and graduates were encouraged to share their comments using the hashtag #HYMSGrad. Take a look at some of the highlights from social media.

Since the School was launched in 2003, the joint Medical School of the universities of Hull and York, it has been inspiring clinical and academic leaders of the future. Its focus on problem-based learning, clinical and communication skills, and early clinical exposure means students are fully prepared for clinical practice as they continue their foundation training in NHS trusts.

As the School celebrates the end of its 20th anniversary, it remains focused on producing confident, compassionate, exceptional doctors who are able to deliver outstanding care to patients.
