At the beginning of July, Hull York Medical School welcomed more than 70 Year 11 pupils from the local area to its latest Summer School.

The Summer School gave participants the opportunity to interact with doctors and health professionals to gain an insight into the types of careers that are available in the NHS.

The Summer School is funded by the Medical Schools Council, in partnership with Health Education England, and aims to inspire teenagers from under-represented backgrounds to engage in higher education, with a particular focus on medicine and other health-related career paths.

During the initial three day online interactive experience, students got to hear from doctors and medical professionals about what their day-to-day roles involve, as well as speaking with current medical students about what life is like studying medicine. Throughout the week, attendees followed a hypothetical patient’s case journey, using problem-based learning to discuss and analyse each stage – from a road collision to hospitalisation, then discharge and community care recovery.

The following week provided participants with the opportunity to take part in an innovative in-person workshop day, during which they were able to practise clinical skills such as suturing, handwashing and plaster casting. Students also had the chance to interact with doctors from more specialist areas such as orthopaedics, looking at bone fixation, and anaesthetics. Other professionals delivering talks, activities and workshops included paramedics, orthotists, therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Hull York Medical School is the joint medical school of the universities of Hull and York. It works in partnership with regional NHS Trusts and community healthcare providers to ensure it responds to local workforce needs and provides its students with the knowledge and skills to deliver exceptional care to patients. Since it was established in 2003, it has trained over 1800 doctors who are now working within the region and beyond - as GPs, Psychiatrists and Consultants across a range of specialties.

The Year 11 Summer School is just one of a number of opportunities Hull York Medical School offers to young people in supporting their journey to becoming doctors and medical professionals of the future.
