The innovative series of live Medicafé web chats will offer a vital resource for applicants at all stages of the journey to studying medicine.

Hull York Medical School has announced that it will run a series of live, interactive web chats to assist aspiring doctors on their journey to studying medicine.

The web series, known as MediCafé, launches on 29 April, and is aimed primarily at prospective medical students currently at school in years 9-13. The online chats will take place weekly, and will provide information and guidance throughout the application process, focusing on a different key topic each week.

Themes will range from Student Life and Work Experience to Medical School Interviews, and will be delivered by experts from the School, supported by student ambassadors who will share knowledge based on their own personal experiences.

Speaking about the launch of the MediCafé initiative, Professor Peter Bazira, Academic Lead for Widening Participation at Hull York Medical School, said:

Demand for medical school places is high, but many myths about who can or should apply to study medicine still persist, and many potential applicants are unsure where to begin. The MediCafé series will provide advice and guidance to any student who is interested in a career in medicine, whether they are just beginning to consider their options and want to know more about what is involved, or are already on the application journey. The talks will provide clear and useful information about applying for and studying medicine at any UK medical school.

MediCafé will open its virtual doors every Wednesday at 12noon starting on 29 April 2020. More details can be found here.

Since Hull York Medical School was established in 2003, it has been committed to raising aspirations, supporting young people’s choices, and encouraging progression into medicine. Its flagship Pathways to Medicine programme runs annually in partnership with the Sutton Trust, offering talented Year 12 students a range of opportunities to give them an insight into the medical profession, supporting them through the application and selection process for medical school, and preparing them for attending university. The School also offers a range of activities for schools and colleges from Year 7 upwards, ranging from discovery days and talks to summer schools and mock interviews. The School has trained over 1600 doctors with many now working as GPs, psyciatrists and consultants across the region.
