Yorkshire Cancer Research will host a free screening of cancer documentary ‘The Enemy Within’ at the University of Hull’s Allam Medical Building on Wednesday, March 21.
The film tells the incredible story of the fight against cancer over the last 50 years through the eyes of scientists, researchers and patients.
Those who attend will have the chance to enjoy refreshments in the company of the charity’s talented young research staff and find out more about their work and the role they are playing in improving cancer outcomes in Yorkshire.
Following the film screening, there will be a question and answer session with Yorkshire Cancer Research Chief Executive Dr Kathryn Scott and leading cancer clinicians and researchers: Professor Una Macleod, Dean of Hull York Medical School; Miriam Johnson, Professor of Palliative Care; Professor Mike Lind, Foundation Professor of Oncology, Helen O’Grady, consultant in colorectal surgery, Dr Raj Roy, consultant clinical oncologist, and Dr Julie Walabyeki, research fellow.
Yorkshire Cancer Research has invested £6.1m in research based at the University of Hull, parent university to Hull York Medical School over the past three years. Projects include a £4.9m fellowship programme designed to tackle cancer inequalities in the area and a community health campaign aimed at improving the early diagnosis of lung cancer in the city.
Professor Una Macleod, Dean of Hull York Medical School, who is leading the £4.9million fellowship programme, said:
Our partnership with Yorkshire Cancer Research – the largest regional cancer charity in England – is fundamental to the School and University’s commitment to improving the health of people in this region and beyond. As a result of the charity’s investment in our research, we are able to address together the devastating impact of cancer on peoples’ lives, as well as the inequalities surrounding cancer treatment, care and early diagnosis.
Andy Wilson, Research Engagement Officer at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We are delighted to be staging this event in partnership with the University of Hull in the new Allam Medical Building, the centre-piece of the University’s £28 million health campus. The building will play a pivotal role in delivering medical training and research which will improve the health of people across the region.”
The Allam Medical Building, designed to attract and develop students and staff who will shape the healthcare workforce of the future, was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in November 2017.
Refreshments, including sandwiches and cake, will be available from 6.15pm, and the film screening will begin at 7pm. Free car parking is available.
Places must be booked in advance. For more information, please visit the Yorkshire Cancer Research website or call Andy Wilson on 01423 501269.
