Physician Associate cohort first to take advantage of the Allam Medical Building

On Monday 11 September 2017, Hull York Medical School was proud to open the doors of the new £28 million Allam Medical building, part of the health campus at the University of Hull, to its new cohort of 32 Physician Associate postgraduate students.

The students will be the first from Hull York Medical School to take advantage of the building’s state-of-the-art study environment, which has been designed to facilitate outstanding clinical and communication skills teaching. Reinforced by regular, hands-on clinical experience within local NHS hospitals and GP surgeries, this teaching will ensure that students are fully equipped to deliver exceptional healthcare across the region and beyond, when they graduate in two years’ time.

The new cohort will join the ranks of more than 60 Physician Associate students already training across Hull, East Yorkshire, Scarborough and North Lincolnshire. And with almost half of the new students having links with the Hull area, either through family or previous study, many are excited to remain in the region in the long term, as part of the local NHS workforce.

Alexandra Terry, new first year Physician Associate trainee and graduate in biomedical science from the University of Hull, said: ‘It’s great to have started on the programme. I’m really looking forward to commencing my clinical training, both in the new medical building and on placement in hospital and general practice. It’s going to be a busy two years, but I’m ready and raring to go – and looking forward to developing a career as a Physician Associate.’

We are really excited to welcome our new cohort of trainee Physician Associates to Hull York Medical School. Despite being a new profession in the UK, Physician Associates are working effectively in GP surgeries and hospitals as part of the clinical team, led by doctors, to diagnose, treat and manage patients’ illnesses. Delivering this programme alongside our established, successful medical degree demonstrates Hull York Medical School’s commitment to supporting the NHS workforce in the region, and helping to ensure it can meet the challenges of a modern day health service.
