On 28 April, more than 200 attendees gathered at Hull York Medical School’s Hull campus for the annual endowed Allam Lecture. Ranging from staff and students from local and regional universities and hospitals, to sixth form colleges and members of the public who had taken part in local clinical trials, guests were given an insight into some of the exciting initiatives led by medical school researchers over the past twelve months.
This year’s guest speaker was Professor S Richard Underwood, Professor of Cardiac Imaging from Imperial College London, whose presentation, entitled ‘Cardiac imaging; the next decade’, provided a fascinating glimpse into the future of this area of research.
The event, which was kindly sponsored by Dr Assem and Mrs Fatima Allam, also included six oral presentations and 21 poster presentations, which showcased the latest cutting edge biomedical research being undertaken in Hull.
Prizes to medical school staff and students were presented by the school’s Dean, Professor Una Macleod, as follows:
Oral presentation
1st – Nikolaos Efthymiou
2nd – Caroline Wright
3rd – Azar Hussain
Poster presentation
1st – Peggy Sfyri
2nd – Lloyd Atkinson
Joint 3rd – James Thompson

An open Q&A session provided an opportunity for the audience to put their questions to a panel of experts, including Professor Underwood and Professor Macleod, as well as senior members of Hull York Medical School staff, Professor Alyn Morice, Professor Andrew Clark, Professor Sathya Sathyapalan and Dr Angela Hoye.
A post-conference gala dinner, hosted by Dr and Mrs Allam, was held in the Civic Suite, The Guildhall, Hull.
