Coronavirus information for Postgraduate applicants

We are looking forward to welcoming you

We understand that as a prospective student or offer holder you will have questions about what your medical school journey with us will look like in light of COVID-19.

We are committed to providing exceptional medical education and on producing clinical and academic leaders of the future who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a changing NHS landscape.

We have been working hard to develop plans for the academic year 2020/21 in light of COVID-19 and are very much looking forward to welcoming you.

The information below we hope will address any queries or concerns that you may have.

The safety of our students and staff is our main priority and we will continue to follow official advice and adapt our response as the situation evolves.

What can I look forward to?

Hull York Medical School is a strong community, comprised of individuals (staff and students) who are committed to working together and supporting each other.

No matter how you begin your journey with us – whether that is online, on campus, or a combination of the two – we will be here to support you and are very much looking forward to welcoming you to our community.

You can look forward to a breadth of learning opportunities, delivered by inspirational tutors who will bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience, and the support you need to progress through your programme. 

When will term start?

We are intending to start the academic year 2020/21 on the dates previously advertised and planned.

Do I need to be on campus in September?

We are looking forward to welcoming all new and returning students onto our Hull and York campuses in September.

It is the expectation that students should be available, in Hull or York, to be able to start or recommence their studies from the appropriate date when induction and teaching starts.

We do appreciate that this may not be possible for some students, for example, due to local restrictions or for those who are shielding, and we are here to support you in undertaking your studies and enjoying a wider student experience whatever your circumstances.

Will there be an induction?

You will have an online induction before you arrive which provide opportunity for you to meet your fellow students, your tutors and find out more information about your course and what to expect in the first few weeks.

What support will be available?

Colleagues across the school will be on hand to support you as you start your journey with us.

Your academic tutor or personal supervisor will be your key point of contact, whether studying online or on campus, and will provide academic and pastoral support as well as signposting to other support should you need it.

You will also have the support of your Programme Director, who will be on hand to ensure you have the learning opportunities and support you need to progress through your programme.

Our Student Support Team will be here to help too. They will be offering online appointments to provide support and guidance.

You will also have access to the support services of our Universities who will offer advice and guidance in areas such as mental health support, general welfare, specific learning difference and disability inclusion, with a range of tools and resources also available.

What if I have an existing health concern?

While we are looking forward to welcoming all new and returning students on to campus in September, we appreciate that this may not be possible for some students, for example, those with pre-existing health concerns who are shielding.

We are here to support all students in undertaking their studies and enjoying a wider student experience.

How will my programme be delivered in 2020?

We are planning for teaching for the academic year 2020/21 to be delivered through a combination of face-to-face on campus learning and activity, with measures in place in accordance with latest government guidelines, and online learning. 

Some teaching will be live and face to face with a member of staff (either on-line or on-campus where physical distancing allows) and some will be supported by a member of staff but they will not necessarily be ‘present’ when you engage with your learning materials online. This is an established and successful teaching and learning model that is often referred to as blended learning. 

Blended learning offers you the flexibility to learn at your own pace, to review material when you want to and to personalise your learning to some extent. It enables active learning because it has a focus on the discussion and application of knowledge with tutors and peers rather than on knowledge acquisition and recall. Blended learning supports the development of digital competence. 

Will there be any additional costs?

As we have previously advised our postgraduate programmes will be delivered through a blended learning approach will include online teaching and learning.

If you do not currently have IT equipment available for your studies, we recommend that you include this as part of your student budget plan as a key item.

Your tuition fees will cover most costs associated with your programme (including registration, tuition, supervision, assessment and examination). Any other extra costs depend on your programme of study, and the decisions you make.

What if there is a further lockdown?

We are continually and proactively monitoring latest guidance and advice.

The plans we have put in place across our postgraduate programmes are agile and will enable us to respond if there is a second national lockdown or local lockdown.

Delivery of your programme will continue, either online or as a revised blend, depending upon lockdown requirements.

Should there be any changes we will aim to communicate these clearly and swiftly.

What will the Medical School be doing to protect my safety and wellbeing?

The health, safety and wellbeing of our staff and students is our main priority.

We, together with our Universities, are closely and proactively monitoring guidance from Government and Public Health England.

We are taking comprehensive steps to make sure our campuses remain safe and welcoming places for you to live, work and study.

We are also working closely with our NHS Trusts, primary care and community providers to ensure that they have support in place to safely welcome and support students while on clinical placement.

As we move closer to the start of term and as part of our induction for new students, we will ensure that students are given clear guidance as to the use of our teaching spaces plus other measures we have introduce to keep our students and staff safe.

What if I am travelling to/returning to the UK from an overseas location requiring self-isolation or quarantine?

If you have travelled overseas to any destination which requires a period of self-isolation or quarantine on return in the UK you must ensure you account for the self-isolation or quarantine period when making your travel plans, to ensure that you are able to safely attend face to face teaching sessions on campus when required.
