Dr Monica Arman Albert

Lecturer in Biomedical Science

Mònica obtained her PhD from the University of Barcelona in 2004 with a thesis that investigated the transcriptional regulation of the lymphocyte proteins CD5 and CD6. She then completed post-doctoral studies in the laboratory of Prof Alexandra Rowe, at the University of Edinburgh, where she investigated the interaction between Plasmodium falciparum infected erythrocytes and platelets, and its association with severe malaria. She continued her post-doctoral training in the laboratory of Prof Steve Watson, at the University of Birmingham, where she studied the molecular pathways that mediate platelet activation by bacteria associated with sepsis and infective endocarditis. In 2015 she was appointed as a lecturer at Hull York Medical School.

Mònica’s research group is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate platelet activation by bloodstream pathogens including P. falciparum and bacteria, with special interest in the role of platelet CD36 and FcγRIIA receptors.
