On Monday 10 July, final year students from Hull York Medical School came together with friends, family and staff to celebrate graduation – the culmination of years of hard work as MB BS undergraduates and postgraduate students.

Addressing graduands at the preceding reception, held at the Britannia Station Hotel in Hull, Dean Una Macleod advised: ‘There are days in all our lives, which are particularly memorable – the day you become a doctor is one of them. From this day forward, your principle teachers will be your patients. Listen to your patients; ask them to tell you their story right from the start.

MB BS graduate Laura Cunliffe led the class of 2017 in reciting the Hull York Medical School oath, which provided a moving close to the graduation ceremony. Speaking about the day, Laura said:

It's difficult to believe that graduation day has arrived! I’ve made the best friends and support network anyone could ask for, and found a whole new family, and to be asked to lead the new cohort of doctors in reciting our oath of practice is a huge honour. Hull York Medical School has taught us to be honest, caring, empathetic doctors, who strive for the best for our patients. We wouldn't change our chosen career path for anything – albeit with some nervousness, we’re really looking forward to making a difference!

Throughout the day, staff and alumni shared messages of support across social media, using the hashtag #HYMSGrad. On Twitter, alumnus Melody Redman said, ‘Treasure the good moments, endure tough ones, change what you can and always stay kind,’ while MB BS Phase I lead Dr Steven Oliver shared the poem These are the hands by Michael Rosen, written to commemorate the 60^th anniversary of the NHS. A number of prizes were awarded during the graduation reception:

• The Founding Dean’s Award, awarded to the student with the best overall academic performance over the five years of the MB BS programme: Helen Woodward
• The Alderson Medal, donated by the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and awarded to the best performing student in clinical assessments in Phases II and III: Olivia Smith
• The Dorothy Robson Prize for Palliative Medicine: Sushma Datla
• Best performance in written papers in Phase III: Lucy Bray
• Best overall academic performance in Phase III: Paul Lindsey
• Exceptional contribution to HYMS in Phase III: Oladunni Adeleye
• Best performance in the BSc in Medical Science (Biological, Biomedical and Environmental Sciences): Jordan Green
• The Dr Sanders Award for best performance in clinical examinations in Phase III: Olivia Smith
