For four days in July 2015, the University of Hull played host to some new faces on campus. This year, a total of 33 year 12 students attended the HYMS Summer School to experience clinical skills activities, taster lectures, problem-based learning, communications workshops and talks from current HYMS students and doctors.
Whilst the majority of students in attendance were from the surrounding Yorkshire and Humberside region, several had travelled from as far as Manchester, Bristol and London. For the first time, HYMS Summer School was extended by a day to include a visit to the University of York campus which was very well received by the students. Students expressed their enjoyment of the week’s activities saying:
“It was one of the best weeks I've ever done.”
“It was a really good week. The ambassadors and staff were all really approachable and kind which made the week more enjoyable and fun.”
Students are now awaiting their AS level results and will be undertaking a period of e-mentoring with current medical students from September to January to further support their applications to medical school and other university courses.
Thank you to all staff involved in particular Dr Andy Kardasz and Vicki Russell from the University of Hull Schools and Colleges Liaison Service, as well as our brilliant medical ambassadors.
