Congratulations to Year 4 student Patrick Campbell who has won a poster prize at the Annual meeting of the European Society for Dermatological Research in Copenhagen for his research on "Germline mutation in EGFR resulting in epithelial inflammation and metabolic abnormalities"
The research was undertaken during Patrick's intercalating year at King's College, London when he investigated rare inherited skin disorders working under the supervision of John McGrath, Professor of Molecular Dermatology for the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
Patrick specifically worked on cases in which diagnosis had not been possible using standard methods, often because the disease had simply not been seen before and was not known to exist. Exome sequencing, a new cutting-edge genetic technique, was then used to try and diagnose these cases. Further research was conducted on especially interesting cases to confirm that the correct cause had been found and to investigate further the impact of the genetic aberration.
