Hull York Medical School recognises excellent student support

Doctors, consultants and other NHS staff delivering excellent teaching and support to medical students on the Hull York Medical School undergraduate medical course were honoured at awards evenings organised by HYMS.

The new HYMS Clinical Teaching Excellence Awards aim to recognise and reward excellence and commitment in clinical education and student support across a range of NHS settings.

Nominations for the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust areas came from the students themselves.

The winners were:

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust area

Clinical Teachers of Excellence: Dr Bashar Yasso, consultant chest physician, at Scunthorpe General Hospital; Dr Olanrewaju Wilson, GP at Birkwood Surgery, Grimsby, and Dr Jayam Lazarus, consultant neurology at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby.

Administrative Support Excellence Award: The Scunthorpe Student Liaison Office, including Louise Coult, Deborah Stocks and Pam Reed.

The Team Excellence Award: The Grimsby Paediatric Team led by Dr Hassan Al-Moasseb, consultant paediatrician, Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, and Dr Jovita Ojadi, GP, Healing Health Centre, Grimsby.

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust area

Clinical Teachers of Excellence: Dr Claire Wensley, consultant paediatrician at York Hospital; Dr Rome Sigsworth, GP from Elvington Medical Practice, York; and Joanne Whitehead, a specialist nurse practitioner and HYMS clinical skills facilitator, from Scarborough Hospital.

Administrative Support Excellence Award: Helen Balawajder, HYMS student liaison Phase I teaching coordinator, at York Hospital.

The Team Excellence Award: Belgrave Surgery, Scarborough.

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust area

Clinical Teachers of Excellence: Professor Sunil Bhandari, consultant nephrologist, at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.; Dr Kanan Pande, GP, Wolseley Medical Centre, Hull, and Dr David Hepburn, consultant physician in diabetes and endocrinology and director of undergraduate medical education at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Administrative Support Excellence Award: Student Liaison and Clinical Skills Facilitator Team, Hull (Team Lead – Ros Low)           

The Team Excellence Award: Elderly Short Stay Unit, Hull Royal Infirmary (Team Lead – Dr Kirsten Richards)

HYMS Dean, Professor Trevor Sheldon, said: “We are so grateful for the hard work and support of the clinicians across our region who help to teach the next generation of doctors. We wanted to do something to acknowledge their contribution to our undergraduate medical course and the HYMS students themselves came up with this prize-giving idea.

“They have voted for who they wanted to win so it is a real tribute to the hard work and commitment that local NHS colleagues put into teaching our students.”
